Club Mom

June 28, 2008

Yesterday at the pool, this one impeccable looking blow dried lady’s kid absolutely refused to come out of the pool when the bell for children’s timing sounded- and further worsened the situation by going and standing arms crossed smack in the centre of the pool. Now this lady looked totally dressed up for a tea party- in her short kurta and capris and chanel glasses so you can imagine my delighted astonishment when shoving her rhinestone studded chappals aside she stomped into the pool, grabbed her kid under her arm and walked back out, giving me a sheepish smile on the way. One that I returned quite wholeheartedly.

The pool at the club I am a member of has the usual suspects. The aunty lot- in their blow dried hair and capris, having their chais and sandwiches while their kids scamper around. The oh very enthusiastic mom who is cheering on her 2 yr old who isn’t doing much more than sitting in the pool. The tired mom who is trying to juggle holding her 5 month old while watching her twins wreak havoc over the slide. A smiley mom who tries to make friends with all the other mothers, whether they look interested or not. Very few dads even though its after work hours. But no comment on that just yet.

I am a very recent addition to the bevy of poolside moms so needless to say, I don’t have friends there yet. Some smiles, a hi hello but no conversation opportunity just yet. I am guilty of pigeonholing people and I just haven’t found a lot there yet where I feel I would fit in with yet. This wade-in mom episode proved to me that no matter how we look, all moms have something in common- the kids. And whether you like it or not, you will have something to at least START talking about.

lol. the answer’s definitely b. if two moms are talking, they’re both itching for the other to start talking about their children – an opening for them – that they cannot resist.
yeah, i try not to talk about noo either, but it’s hard isn’t it? :)
